What a final round it was of the AIG Women’s Open – it was exciting, nerve-wracking and inspiring to watch. Over the last two rounds, there was one player who inspired me the most, Charley Hull.
Building on from my last newsletter and my struggles with imposter syndrome, I was watching Charley play on the edge of my seat, with a big smile on my face. The freedom, the fearlessness, the fun…even under the pressure of being the home favourite.
It left me thinking, I want a taste of that exciting energy in my game.
How I’m channeling Charley
The making birdies mindset
When you watch Charley play, you know she’s out there to make birdies and with this mindset comes a confidence in her game. It never looks like she’s playing it safe or trying to protect her score.
I know what you’re thinking…making birdies might be easier for Charley than it is for most of us and I agree. That’s why it’s the belief that birdies are possible that I’m excited to bring into my game.
Imagine how you would feel, standing over your shot, with the confidence that you’re out there to chase it down.
The fearless freedom
Charley partners her making-birdies-mindset with a fearlessness over the ball. You know that if Charley goes for “the shot” and it doesn’t come off, she backs herself to get out of trouble. Did you see her flop shot on the 17th hole of the final round? Epic.
That’s why I’m working on filling my gaps around the green, so that I can get chasy, without worrying about leaving myself in a tricky spot.
Life’s too short to play it safe
I’ve been channeling Charley in my last few rounds and it’s brought a renewed buzz to my game. I’m giving myself opportunities that playing it safe wouldn’t bring and I can’t wait to see how this builds. After all…what’s the worst that can happen…she says.
How about you – are you feeling inspired, like me, to channel Charley’s chasing energy in your game? I’d love to hear in a comment below.
Looks like it’s paying off if it helped to break 80! 👏🏻 Practice it first and then take it to the course. You can pick plenty worse than our Charley! 😍
